Greta Van Fleet are a rock band from Frankenmuth, Michigan formed in 2012. The band’s lineup consists of twin brothers Josh and Jake Kiszka (on guitar and vocals respectively), as well as younger brother Sam Kiszka on bass and keyboards, and their friend Danny Wagner on drums.
I’ll say this right off the bat and get it out of the way, this band sounds damn near identical to Led Zeppelin. An impressive feat, considering that twin brothers Josh and Jake are only 21 years old, and younger brother Sam and drummer Danny are only 18 years old. What immediately struck me on my first listen to this band, was the power of Jake Kiszka’s vocals, and how much they truly evoked Robert Plant’s vocals in the early Zeppelin days.
Secondly, I want to say how refreshing it is to hear a new band in the year 2018, that plays straightforward rock and roll. That being said (and I really don’t want to sound like a hater here) I can’t help but wonder where the expiration date on the Led Zeppelin schtick is. Mind you, it takes an enormous level of talent to even copy the sound and musical prowess of one of rock and roll’s greatest bands of all time, but we already had a Led Zeppelin.
At the end of the day, I really want this band to find their own voice using the chops they’ve already honed to a fine edge, and then I want them to take over the fucking world. In an age where everything is so watered-down, synthesized, and auto-tuned to death and back, we need bands like Greta Van Fleet to remind us of the intimate touch to the senses that is true rock and roll. Amen.
